The role is ideally suited to a senior legal counsel or private practice lawyer looking to transition in-house, particularly someone with a strong grounding in major projects, construction contracts and project finance and/or M&A in the energy or infrastructure space. You will operate in a true sponsor-side role, advising on projects end-to-end, from early structuring through to financing, construction and operations.
You’ll work closely with commercial, development and investment teams, taking ownership of matters typically handled by external counsel, while remaining supported by an experienced international legal team and external consultants.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a trusted legal adviser across the full lifecycle of energy generation and transmission projects
- Lead and support legal aspects of construction, project finance and transaction-related matters from a sponsor perspective
- Draft, review and negotiate key project and transaction documents, including JV arrangements, EPC/D&C contracts and financing documentation
- Support bidding processes, project structuring and risk allocation decisions
- Manage claims, disputes and interface issues arising during construction and delivery
- Coordinate and manage external legal advisers, reviewing advice and driving outcomes
- Provide pragmatic, commercially focused advice to senior stakeholders and international legal leadership
- LLB or Juris Doctor; NSW Practising Certificate
- 7+ years’ PQE, ideally gained in a top-tier or strong mid-tier law firm and/or in-house in an energy, engineering construction or utilities business
- Required experience in major projects, including EPC, project finance, commercial structuring and M&A contracts
- Background advising sponsors, developers, investors or contractors on complex projects
- Strong drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
- Commercial mindset with the confidence to operate autonomously in a fast-moving environment
